Grading Pipher

Obviously, Pipher would get an A on her essay in the category of correct grammatical use as her essay was published in a college textbook. Her essay is very well organized; it just flows and is in chronological order. She starts off talking about when she was a twelve year old girl and first read The Diary of Anne Frank and then she talks about when she was fifty five years old and visited the Holocaust museum. Piper’s transitions are very smooth and her essay seems to slowly transition as a whole from addressing Anne Frank’s life to informing the audience how writing can change the world because people have so many interpretations of what writing can mean. She used her thesis throughout the whole essay so that it had one main theme. Her theme of the essay was how books and writings can have many different interpretations and it was easy to tell what her theme was. She talked about the experiences she had while reading Anne Frank’s diary, specifically pointing out how some writings you read can change the way you view things forever. If I was a teacher and was giving Mary Pipher a grade on her essay, I would honestly say that it is an A. Her thesis is clearly stated and she uses personal experience to help support her thesis. Her essay is very well organized and grammatically correct. Her tone was noticeable throughout the essay; it was a serious tone and then changed to an informational tone. Using the essay rubric given to us in class, I would say that Pipher follows almost everything on it and would deserve an A.

EKU First Week!

On the second floor of the Whitlock Building you can find the financial aid assistance. Most people will probably visit this place at least one time while they are in college. It requires a sign in because there is usually a wait to speak with someone about your financial needs.

This is where I went to declare a major, the academic advisors! They helped me figure out what I needed to do to get on track to graduate with my selected major in four years. I might end up coming here again if I decide to change my major, but hopefully I don't have to.

Raymond says that from the start of school, his family suspected that there was a problem with his ability to read and because of that problem, he felt like he wanted to die. He felt like he was the dumbest person in the world. He felt like everything he attempted to do he would fail at because he failed at one of the most important things that there is: reading. No young child should feel like that, especially in a school environment; there should be almost too much encouragement in a school environment. It didn’t help Raymond’s situation that the kids in his class would make fun of him because of the troubles he had reading the board. All that Raymond wanted was friends and he felt that because he couldn’t read no one wanted to be his friend. He became concerned about how he was going to live his life after school because there might not be anyone to help him. Raymond’s story can tell us about how early childhood experiences in the educational system can affect us today. My early childhood in school was great and I really enjoyed learning and my teachers I had, so maybe because I enjoyed it then, I’m able to continue my schooling now and actually enjoy it as well. What I’m saying is that the way we are treated in school at an early age carries with us all throughout the rest of our school career and can somewhat determine the educational path that we decide to take. Experiences in school at an early age are important and this can definitely be shown in Raymond’s story.

Financial Literacy

Going into the Personal Finance seminar on Wednesday I was actually very excited for it because I had just declared my major to finance! During the program I was very attentive the whole time because it was something I was actually pretty interested in. When the speaker talked about investing money I already felt ahead of the game a little bit. Recently, I set up an individual account at Hilliard Lyons so I can invest some money into the stock market. Also, I set up my own Roth account and I haven’t even got a career yet! When the speaker talked about saving money at every chance you have, I felt one step ahead there too. My coin bank at home probably has well over a hundred dollars in it just by putting coins in there everyday when I got home. I also do this saving strategy where every time I come in possession of a five dollar bill, I put it away somewhere and don’t touch it. Just by doing that i’ve saved close to a hundred more dollars. I’d say that I am somewhat financially literate, but at the most basic level. I’m really looking into expanding that knowledge on finance into something I can make a career out of.

MAJORly Stressed

I have been looking into going into finance for a few months before college, but I wasn’t completely sure if I wanted to do it or not so I came into college with a major undeclared. Yesterday I went to my academic advisor and wanted to declare my major to finance and I did. I dropped one class and ended up adding two more. I felt good that I finally had a major picked out, but at the same time I feel really stressed because I had to get new supplies for the classes I added and also I missed the first days of the classes because of switching into them later in the week. One of the classes I added was CIS 212, a computer class. I think it will be interesting to learn how to work a computer better, but at the same time I am so nervous for this class because I’ve missed the first two days of the class already and the announcements on Blackboard look like a foreign language to me. I did take some initiative however, and emailed the professor and asked if he would meet with me since I missed the first couple days and he said that he would. I’m hoping that he will be a big help to me and that I can figure out the system that’s required for the class. If I can figure it out I’m sure that I’ll be fine, but for right now I’m so stressed about that class because I don’t know a whole lot about computers to begin with and it seems like it is going to be difficult.
